Sony PCL handles the planning, production and post production of visual contents for some of the largest films, commercials and music videos in Japan, as well as the authoring and packaging of this material to DVD or Blu-Ray. The company also provides planning, promotion and digital content creation for various types of live events. Sony PCL is using DaVinci Resolve across its portfolio of services, many of which now include 3D and 4K footage.

In September, Sony PCL installed a DaVinci Resolve system in the company’s grading room for grading, conforming and rendering, and also installed Resolve Software into their main machine room to handle additional colour correction. The suites are each used with a CUBIX Expander to create a 2GPU system. Both systems are connected to SAN and local SAS RAIDs, which allows conforms to be performed in the machine room while the grading done in the separate grading suite.

Kiyoshi Kogami, in the Digital Production Division of Sony PCL’s Visual Solution Department, feels that by reducing the cost of installing a grading system in this way, the company can add a higher quality grading service at a more competitive price. He also said the software’s XML support has made it easier to handle offline data. Colourist Yoshiro Kamei said, “Many of our clients bring materials in various file formats. Resolve supports a broad range of these formats, so we can meet an expansive range of demands. Resolve also lets us access files directly so I don’t have to import them to start grading. It is a big time saver.”  www.blackmagic-design.com   www.sonypcl.jp
