Sony PMW-200 Brings Large Sensor Multi-format HD to Broadcasters
Sony’s new PMW-200 handheld camcorder is equipped with three 1/2-inch Exmor CMOS
sensors and full-HD 4:2:2 50Mbps recording.
| Handheld 50Mbps camcorders typically use 1/3-inch sensors. The larger 1/2-inch sensors improve the PMW-200’s sensitivity and ability to capture high quality, HD resolution footage in compromised lighting conditions and very bright environments. | |

The camera is built as a new model in Sony’s XDCAM HD422 line with operations similar to the PMW-EX1R, plus extra functions such as MPEG HD422 recording, and is compliant with EBU recommendations for long form broadcast production. The PMW-200 is suited to broadcast programmes, corporate video and event production. A photographer can also work in various recording formats, such as 50Mbps/35Mbps MXF, 35Mbps/25Mbps MP4 and DVCAM, to coordinate with different applications and workflows. Recording media options are Sony SxS, SD and XQD cards, used with an adaptor, and Memory Stick. |

The PMW-200 has a Slow & Quick motion function which allows capture at 1 fps to 60 fps in 720p mode, and from 1 fps to 30 fps in 1080p mode, where further creative options are required. An immediate playback function enables you to view shots without an external converter or processing on an NLE. The camera’s 14x zoom lens has three independent rings for zoom, focus and iris adjustment, plus ring position indicators on the LCD screen to adjust more precisely and give more control. The screen is a full-colour 3.5-inch WVGA LCD panel. The PMW-200 also has a 15 second cache recording function, which is unusual for a handheld camcorder, using internal memory to capture images for up to 15 seconds before pushing the record button. |

Genlock and timecode interfaces on the PMW-200 are included for multi-camera set ups and basic HD studio applications. A Wi-Fi remote control can be used with an adaptor in a studio or on location. Availability for the PMW-200 camcorder is expected from mid-September 2012. The Wi-Fi remote control function for the PMW-200 is due by December 2012 through a free firmware upgrade. pro.sony-asia.com |
