Scandinavian public broadcasters SVT/Sweden and Yle/Finland have launched new online and mobile services that employ responsive web design. They are using Vizrt software for their digital media production workflow, and the design appearing in their online and mobile device services is based on their own in-house research and development.

In responsive web design, the on-screen content is optimized for the resolution and size of displays on various devices including smart phones, tablet computers and laptops. The web page - including text, video, graphics, apps and navigational elements - contains logic and instructions that prompt each device to adapt the presentation layout automatically, according to its own particular display characteristics.

This type of end-user experience includes uninterrupted navigation.  For example, click-for-more links cause further text within a website to open on the spot, rather than in a separate pop-up window.

The Vizrt Online Suite is a content management system comprising the Escenic Content Studio for creating rich-media websites and the Escenic Content Engine, which stores and delivers content and has an API that developers can extend to implement responsive web designs. To align with specifications for many smart phones and other mobile devices, the suite supports HTML5 and CSS, JavaScript, AJAX and content modelled in XML.

Another part of the Vizrt Online Suite for simplifying website development is the Widget Framework. It provides ready-made partial templates that contain code to create specific elements of the web page, such as articles, menus, ads, polls and so on. Content dropped into a particular area of the layout assigned to a widget automatically assumes the functionality of that widget. This can potentially allow a wider group of staff in an organisation to contribute to website creation.

SVT Sweden websites that employ responsive web design include video on demand, a children’s channel, investigative journalism, 2012 Olympics and Eurovision Music. YLE/Finland’s websites running on this system cover news and sport.  www.vizrt.com
