Cinedeck RX Delivers Solid-State Recording for Broadcast

Published on Tuesday, 24 January 2012

The Cinedeck RX is a new rack-mountable, solid-state recording, monitoring and playback system
designed for tapeless post-production and broadcast workflows in 2D and stereo 3D formats.

Cinedeck RX is a development of the Cinedeck EX, a multi-format HD-SDI recording system used in cinema, studio and post. Cinedeck RX extends to broadcast applications produced either within a facility or on site. Cinedeck says they have focused on native capture and codec choice, flexible connectivity and editorial workflow options and compact size, 4RU half-rack at under 5kg. Versatility between 2D and stereo 3D, and on multi-camera shoots, was a particular concern. Cinedeck RX uses the same intuitive touchscreen interface as the Cinedeck EX to make it easier to learn and faster to use in the field.

Cinedeck RX captures from the major production formats, recording onto ordinary SSD storage, and can be used for single input, dual-input two-camera or 3D stereo shoots. Cinedeck also natively supports Avid and Apple standards simultaneously, namely Avid DNxHD wrapped as MXF OP-Atom or QuickTime, JFIF for proxies, and the Apple ProRes codec formats including 4444, CineForm and uncompressed 444 10-bit or 422, 8- or 10-bit. Its Double Dual-Stream function can capture two feeds at a time with the same codec, or one feed with two different compression formats, such as Avid DNxHD and Apple ProRes together or Hi-Res master and Low-Res proxy together, while simultaneously creating back-up copies of each.

Cinedeck RX monitors video in realtime via a high-resolution, 7" touchscreen display. The image analysis tools include edge enhancement for focus assist, clipping, waveform, vectorscope and histogram. Users can also monitor audio via the headphone jack, toggling between audio inputs, while simultaneously viewing the on-screen recording level display. Users also have the option to review and quality control shots instantly in realtime, and in any order, through the built-in display or external HD-SDI or HDMI monitors.

One of the first customers to install Cinedeck RX is outside broadcast service company All Mobile Video in New York, which is integrating multiple Cinedeck RX systems into its fleet of OB vehicles and in-house post-production facility. Their clients’ projects may involve multi-camera televised sports, music, entertainment events, plus cinema and corporate production, for which the Cinedeck RX has been able to handle the different capture and post requirements. Also because it has been able to save time on ingest into post, they have been offering clients more competitive, all-in pricing. In the future they expect Cinedeck RX will support their intentions to remove tape-based acquisition from their workflow.

Because Cinedeck RX captures files in the native format chosen by the user, footage can immediately be edited in Apple Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas and GV Edius without ingest and transcoding,. The device is network-accessible, and supports realtime up/down/cross conversion for transition to new production formats. Redundant files can be created on separate local or remote discs and redundant hot swappable power supplies may be used to protect material during capture.  www.cinedeck.com
