Kodak and ARRI Share Success on Academy Awards Night |
| Of the nine best picture nominees, four were filmed with a combination of Kodak stock and ARRI cameras. On ‘Argo’, as well as the ARRI ALEXA Plus, DP Rodrigo Prieto ASC, AMC also chose the ARRIFLEX 435 and 235. He was using Zeiss Super Speed, Ultra Prime, Angenieux Optimo and Canon lenses. The film types were varied and included Kodak 16 mm, 8mm and 35mm stocks. The lighting package was provided by Illumination Dynamics, an ARRI company. |

‘Silver Linings Playbook’ was shot by DP Masanobu Takayanagi using the Arricam LT camera with Zeiss Master Prime and Angenieux Optimo lenses on Kodak Vision3 stock. DP Ben Richardson filmed ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ with the Arriflex 16 SR3 and Arriflex 416 on Kodak Super 16 mm film, using Zeiss Super Speed lenses. 'Les Miserables’ was shot by Danny Cohen BSC with the Arricam LT and ST and Zeiss Master Prime, Ultra Prime and Angenieux Optimo Lenses on 35 mm Kodak Vision2 and Vision3 films. It was a successful Academy Awards night for movies recorded on Kodak film. In the 85-year history of the awards, no Oscar-winning best picture has been made without the use of motion picture film. Two other best picture nominees were also shot on Kodak, ‘Django Unchained’ and ‘Lincoln’. Films on Kodak also won Oscars in all four acting categories, as well as adapted and original screenplay, among others. In all, movies produced on Kodak stock took Awards in 12 of the 19 narrative, non-animated feature categories. Andrew Evenski, president and general manager of Kodak’s Entertainment and Commercial Films Group said, “Filmmakers want creative options. We are as committed as ever to providing them with a choice for telling stories. We are currently making billions of feet of film, and maybe next year’s best winner is already being shot on Kodak film.” |

Movies making use of ARRI equipment have won many of the major prizes. As well as Best Picture, 'Argo' won Editing and Adapted Screenplay awards. 'Life of Pi' was captured stereoscopically on multiple ALEXAs with ARRI/ZEISS Master Primes using Cameron Pace 3D rigs. This makes the second year in a row the cinematography and visual effects Academy Awards have gone to productions captured on ALEXA. Amour, also shot on ALEXA, won the Best Foreign Film category. Les Miserables which won multiple awards including Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway, as mentioned utilized 35mm ARRICAMs. Out of nine Best Picture nominees for the Academy Awards this year, seven were shot using ARRI cameras. Four out of five films nominated for Best Director were shot with ARRI – ‘Amour’ director Michael Haneke, ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ by Benh Zeitlin, ‘Life of Pi’ by Ang Lee and ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ by David O.
