Nikon D7100 DSLR Packs 24MP DX Sensor & Remote HD Shooting

The D7100 has a DX-format CMOS sensor measuring 29mm diagonal - yielding 43 per cent of the sensor area of the 35mm film or full-frame digital formats - with an effective pixel count of 24.1-million pixels. It uses a high-performance EXPEED 3 image-processing engine, and does not have an optical low-pass filter. The camera supports standard ISO sensitivities from ISO 100 to ISO 6400, plus expansion to an equivalent of ISO 25600. It also has a new RGBW array to help accumulate light more effectively.

The camera shoots 1920 x 1080/60i and 1920 x 1080/30p video at the same resolutions as stills. The Multi-area mode Full-HD D-Movie function supports movie recording using both the standard DX-movie image area and the new 1.3x DX crop image area option, bringing distant subjects closer.

The 51-point AF system uses cross-type sensors for the 15 most frequently used focus points at the centre of the frame. The centre focus point functions with lenses with a maximum aperture of f/8, improving the precision of auto-focusing under various conditions. The D7100 also has a new crop image area, 1.3x DX crop, which increases the angle of view by approximately 1.3x that of the standard DX-format angle of view. This increases lens focal length to an equivalent angle of view of approximately two times, making distant subjects larger. Furthermore, the 51 focus points cover the entire image area when 1.3x DX crop is enabled. This allows subjects moving randomly through the frame to be captured with high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 7 fps.

New functions in the D7100 include Spot White Balance, a white balance Preset Manual option that allows users to choose a specific subject or portion of the frame from which white balance is measured with shooting in live view. This may eliminate the need to prepare a reference object, such as a gray card, and allows preset white balance measurement without changing lenses when a super-telephoto lens is used. It can be useful for outdoor shooting, and sports and landscape photography.

The optical viewfinder uses a glass pentaprism, a bright high-contrast OLED display element and close to 100 percent frame coverage with 0.94x magnification. The camera’s 3.2in high-res thin-film transistor LCD monitor has a wide viewing angle, an RGBW array that increases brightness in bright surroundings, and a button for direct access to frequently used functions for viewfinder and live view photography, movie recording and playback modes. Pressing this button displays the options screen for the desired setting, and accesses setting options.

The D7100 supports the new wireless WR-1 transceiver, which is sold separately and used to verify and adjust settings and control remote shooting. The WR-1 uses radio waves and supports 15 channels for communication between multiple WR-1s. One WR-1 can be configured as a transmitter or receiver to control multiple remote cameras.

The Nikon DX format results in a compact, portable, lightweight camera measuring about 136mm wide, 107mm high and 76mm deep and weighing 675gm. The top and rear covers are of magnesium alloy, sealed against water and dust. A stereo microphone is built into the pentaprism. The release date is anticipated in late March 2013. www.nikon.com
