Sony F5/F55 to Gain Avid DNxHD, ProRes & ENG Kit Updates

Sony PMW-F5 and F55 CineAlta 4K cameras have an open architecture that the company continues to use to update the cameras’ production and post production workflows through hardware upgrades. Two future upgrades were announced at NAB 2014, as well as news that an optional shoulder mount ENG and documentary dock kit, with on board audio control, rear XLR inputs and other extras, is due to arrive later in the year.

Sony plans to add the AVID DNxHD codec as a future hardware upgrade option that allows DNxHD files to be stored in the MXF OP-1a wrapper, and recorded on-board to Sony’s SxS PRO+ memory card format. This would result in a direct-to-edit, file-based workflow between the cameras and the Avid MediaCentral platform, and retain the images’ original look and colour from the 4K Super35mm sensor and signal processing.

Sony also announced Apple ProRes on-board recording as a future optional upgrade, also stored and recorded internally to SxS PRO+ memory cards. The ProRes capability will be provided as an option board.
