Autodesk Smoke 2013 Puts Compositing on Editor’s Timeline

Published on Tuesday, 17 April 2012

At NAB 2012, Autodesk showed Smoke 2013, redesigned as a video editing
and visualFX tool for the Mac with a new workflow placing node-based
compositing directly in the timeline and further updates.

Also at the Show, Evan Schechtman of transmedia company @radical
media in New York is demonstrating an integrated Final Cut Pro X to Smoke workflow for
Grey Goose vodka for Autodesk.

Autodesk aims to address dealing with different file formats through new editing and finishing tools, in particular supporting HD and higher resolution formats, and producing better quality content for web, new mobile platforms, interactive advertising and traditional broadcast. Smoke now has a unified editing and FX workflow designed to help editors centrally manage media and work interactively with high-res media throughout projects.

The Smoke User Interface combines track-based editing conventions and Autodesk’s creative tools. ConnectFX is a node-based compositing inside the timeline for effects and compositing without leaving the editorial environment. Creative Tools include finishing tools, Action for 3D compositing, the Colour Warper for professional grading and color matching, the Master Keyer for one-click chroma keying and stereo 3D editing and effects. MediaHub works natively with common formats to help manage project media from ingest to edit to effects and archiving. Lower System Requirements mean that Smoke 2014 can runs recent generation Apple iMac and MacBook Pro systems using high-bandwidth Thunderbolt storage and IO, suiting desktop and mobile workflows.

Anticipated availability of Autodesk Smoke 2013 is for the second half of 2012. www.autodesk.com
