Quantel Pablo PA Automates Conforms at RingSide Creative

RingSide Creative in Detroit has purchased Quantel’s conform and preparation software, RingSide - day-to-night 2a
Pablo PA, to handle time consuming conforms and leave its eQ, iQ and Pablo available
on client-focused work.

RingSide Creative provides interactive video and audio branding services to advertising, entertainment and broadcast customers, and needs to speed up the post processing side of projects to make sure clients make the most of the time they spend in the suites.

Senior Editor, Jeff Fleck said that while they have been using the suites on their projects successfully for several years, they now need them to help deal with the wide variety of formats they are seeing regularly. “For example, Pablo PA has been working on new labels for a brand that we’ve been finishing on Quantel eQ and iQ for the past decade, utilizing data that has been carefully stored and indexed over the years. Instead of retrieving scenes from videotapes, archives containing manipulated images were restored and imported to Pablo PA so that we could craft new packages from the old ones, duplicating light and colour correction. Pablo PA faithfully recreated these images.

“We have also put the PA to work on a series of web videos for the new Corvette, assembled from a wide range of materials captured on Phantom, Canon 5D, Go Pro, Red Mysterium and stills. Conforms were sent to be colour corrected on the facility’s iQ’s and returned to the PA for final tweaks and supers. Pablo PA has also assembled and finished a couple of national Jeep commercials in between these assignments, one of which involved removing rain from a night shot in LA.

“When using Pablo PA to import large files, volume, frame size and bit depth are included, so decisions about how to transfer projects to other systems can be made as each complete project is evaluated. It is important to keep data as intact as possible while a project moves through a facility.”

Jeff also said, “Quantel colour correction is very good and we use it as our primary colour correction system and we anticipate that Pablo PA will be our bridge to technical challenges.” Pablo PA is used to conform the project accurately before moving it to Pablo for colour and finishing. Missing files can be identified then and located, and files in the wrong configuration can be corrected, without wasting time in the main suite. Last minute EDL changes are handled by using your previous version as a reference clip. There is no media to move once the archive is in the Pablo because it points to the stored files.

DI Colourist, Rick Unger said, “I have used Pablo PA on the recent Leo Burnett GMC Terrain advert, ‘Geocaching’, which was shot on Red Epic, Alexa and Canon 5D. I could conform R3D files and bring in QuickTime files from the Canon 5D. The conform of the 60 second version took about two minutes, all frame accurate to the offline, but I could still tweak the timings. It is also possible to colour grade multiple video timelines all stacked on top of each other. With the colour tools, I can change a scene’s mood from day to night, and in the ‘Geocache’ spot I could key hot light sources and adjust levels of brightness as required.”   www.quantel.com
